It wasn’t supposed to end this way for the UL-L baseball team.
But back-to-back loses, including a 3-1 defeat in the regional final to Arizona, caused an early exit for the Ragin’ Cajuns from the NCAA Division I baseball tournament.
UL-L was one of the hottest teams in the country coming into the regional tournament, winners of their last ten games in a row, including the Sunbelt Conference tourney title.
The Cajuns started regionals a little shaky, having to come from behind to defeat a scrappy Princeton ball club.
However, it looked like UL-L was back on track, defeating Arizona by a resounding 10-3 score in game two.
With the win over the Wildcats, all the Cajuns needed was one more win and they would be off to their second super regional appearance in a row.
But, Arizona had other plans. The Wildcats came out on Monday afternoon with a laser like focus.
Arizona took game one from UL-L 6-3. The Wildcats scored all six runs in the first four innings and held off a late Cajun run to force the if necessary game.
The Wildcats took advantage of UL-L starting pitcher Wyatt Marks early on in the contest, scoring all three of their runs in the first two innings of play.
UL-L could not get any offense going in the rubber match game, garnering only one hit through the first three innings. It wasn’t until the top of the fourth, when Cajun centerfielder Kyle Clemnet hit a lead off home run, that UL-L was able to get on the board.
The jubilation and thoughts of a comeback were short lived, as the Cajuns could only muster three more hits, none consecutively, in the next five innings.
UL-L finishes the season with an overall record of 43-21. Arizona moves on to the super regional to face Mississippi St.
