Fontenot honored for performance

LAKE CHARLES – For the second consecutive week, senior hurler Kaleb Fontenot has been chosen as the Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week presented by UniversalCoin.com, the league office announced on Monday.
Fontenot was also selected by CollegeSportsMadness.com as the conference’s player of the week. The honor given by the national website is the first for McNeese.
Coming off a complete game shutout last weekend in San Antonio, Fontenot continued his superb play on the mound and rattled off his second straight shutout as the McNeese baseball team rolled to a 3-0 win over Abilene Christian on Friday.
Fontenot became the first McNeese pitcher since 2013 to toss consecutive shutouts as he fired off nine innings and allowed no runs and just two hits. He set a career-high in strikeouts as he fanned 12 batters on the night. When he completed the ninth, Fontenot extended his shutout streak to 18 straight innings. In that two-start span, Fontenot has allowed nine hits while striking out 19 and walking six
The league honor is the second consecutive for Fontenot and the Cowboys this season.
McNeese was scheduled to complete a home series against Northwestern State University starting this Friday.
Fontenot was slated to pitch in game one of that series.
Fontenot is having a tremendous senior season. The right-handed graduate of Sacred Heart is 3-2 on the season in six appearances and sports a 1.73 ERA.
Fontenot has struck out 45 batters while only walking 12.
Opponents are only batting a meager .187 against Fontenot. He has only allowed eight earned runs and 28 hits in 41.2 innings of work.
