LAKE CHARLES – McNeese State senior and All-Southland Conference starting pitcher Kaleb Fontenot was selected Saturday by the Texas Rangers in the 21st round as the 639th overall pick in the 2016 Major League Baseball Draft.
The Ville Platte native and former Sacred Heart School star garnered second team all-SLC honors after he led the Cowboys' and ranked second in the league with a .202 ERA. He compiled a 6-5 record on the season in 15 appearances, threw a team-high 107 innings (second in the Southland) and led the conference with 108 strikeouts finishing just eight fans shy of tying a 26-year old school single-season record. Fontenot also set a new school record during the season with 28 consecutive shutout innings pitched and threw two completes games on the year with two shutouts. He was also a part of a combined shutout on the year.
Fontenot earned his bachelor's degree in management this past May and compiled a 4.0 GPA in the process.
And after tossing the Cowboys to a win over Northwestern State and the league's pitcher of the year in the opening round of the conference tournament, Fontenot was named to the league's all-tournament team.
Fontenot finished his career with 19 wins and a 2.55 ERA. He also fanned 252 batters in his career, ranking him third on the McNeese all-time career list while his victory total ranks eighth all-time.
Fontenot becomes the 49th player in McNeese baseball history to get selected in the draft and the 19th since the year 2000.
