LSU-E baseball ends season at Region 23 tourney

The top-ranked LSU Eunice baseball team saw their season end with a 13-9 loss to Jones County Junior College Saturday in the NJCAA Division II Region 23 tournament.
The Bengals (51-6) jumped out to a 4-0 advantage in the top of the first, begun when Zach LaFleur walked and scored on Nick Coomes’ double to right field.
Turner Francis was hit by a pitch and later scored on a balk, while Hunter Feduccia singled in Coomes and later scored on a passed ball to push the Bengals ahead, 4-0.
LSUE exploded for four more runs in the top of the second to extend its lead to 8-0.
Janson Bourque opened the frame with a walk, stole second and scored on a sacrifice fly by Coomes.
LaFleur singled and scored on a hit by Francis, while Will Watson walked and scored on a single by Feduccia.
Francis crossed home plate on a single by Fontenot as the Bengals pushed ahead by eight runs.
Jones exploded for six runs in the bottom of the third, sparked by a RBI double by Shelton Wallace and grand slam by John Alan Wall.
The Bengals responded with a run in the top of the fourth as Feduccia reached on an error and scored on a single by Fontenot to extend LSUE’s lead to 9-6.
The Bobcats (47-8) took the lead with a six-run surge in the bottom of the fifth, begun when Tanner Huddleston walked and scored on Erick Hoard’s double to right field.
Jonathan Parker singled and Dalton Skelton was hit by a pitch, while Hoard scored on a bases loaded walk by Fred Franklin.
Sasser was hit by a pitch to plate Parker and Skelton scored on a wild pitch.
Huddleston singled in Franklin, while Sasser scored on another wild pitch as the Bobcats moved ahead, 12-9.
Jones added an insurance run when Wall homered in the bottom of the sixth and the Bengals managed just two final base runners when Coomes walked in the eighth and Fontenot walked in the top of the ninth inning.
Braxton Smith suffered the loss to finish the season with a 5-2 record.
Fontenot led the Bengals at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a walk and two RBI.
Feduccia went 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored, while LaFleur went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Michael Claverie finished 2-for-5.
