Heritage Manor News: Explanation of seizures

A seizure is defined as a transient alteration in behavior, function or consciousness that results from an abnormal electrical discharge of neurons in the brain. Chronic recurrent seizures are also referred to as epilepsy or seizure disorders. Seizures are usually a symptom of another underlying disease or disorder. They are sometimes caused by strokes, brain tumors and some have no identifiable cause. Secondary epilepsy is usually due to injury of the cerebral cortex. Up to 80 percent of older adults who have had a seizure are more likely to have another. Cerebral vascular accidents or fever from infection could cause a seizure that is common in the elderly. Stress has been determined as a contributing factor to the onset of seizures. Anyone who experiences a seizure should seek medical attention immediately.
