This week, we take a look back at February 1991
•Edwin Edwards visited the Mamou Rotary Club as his first campaign stop in his bid for a fourth term as governor. He attended the club’s Man and Woman of the Year Banquet where Steven Edward Tate and Mary Delyne Fontenot were the honored recipients.
•Kristie Fontenot, a 17-year-old student at Sacred Heart High School and daughter of Terryl and Barbara Fontenot spent New Year’s in London, England, after she was one of 1,200 cheerleaders from across the US to participate in the Lord Mayor of Westminster’s New Year’s Day Parade in London.
•John David Fontenot was one of three runners-up in the national young farmer and rancher contest. He and 42 other finalists attended the American Farm Bureau Convention in Phoenix, Arizona, where the winners were recognized.
•The student population at LSU-Eunice was up 27 percent from the previous year, with Evangeline Parish having 484 students out of the total 2,316 students enrolled.
•A feasibility study was done to help decide if an indoor recreational complex would be successful in Mamou.
•Mayor Hottell Fontenot signed a proclamation declaring February as literacy month.
•18-year-old Rachel Lanclos was crowned as the new Farm Bureau Queen.
•Cortez Frank of Mamou, assistant professor of mathematics at the Laboratory School in Baton Rouge, was invited to attend the Department of Energy Institute.
•Mrs. Wilson (Penny) Fontenot was named Catholic Daughter of the Year during the group’s annual banquet.
•The Foxhoven Family made several stops to perform around Evangeline Parish, including a performance at Sacred Heart High School.
•Sale items at A&P included boneless chuck roast for $1.77 per pound, set of percale sheets and pillow cases for $9.99, pint of strawberries for 99 cents per pint, five-pound bag of russet potatoes for $1.39 and 60-count box of Pampers diapers for $9.99.
•Sale items at Napa Auto Parts included Napa E Series brake pads of brake shoes for $7.99, quart of Castor Oil AD 30 oil for 99 cents per quart and can of WD-40 for 99 cents each.
•Sale items at Wal-Mart included three horse power lawn mower with Briggs and Statton engine for $98.94, four-piece wicker furniture set for $157 and folding lawn chair for $9.68.
•Movies released in February 1991 included “The Silence of the Lambs” starring Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins, “Sleeping with the Enemy” starring Julia Roberts and Patrick Bergin, “Not Without My Daughter” starring Sally Field and Alfred Molina, “L.A. Story” starring Steve Martin and Marilu Henner and “He Said, She Said” starring Kevin Bacon and Elizabeth Perkins.
•Popular songs of February 1966 included “All the Man I Need” by Whitney Houston, “Someday” by Mariah Carey, “One More Try” by Timmy T, “Love Will Never Do Without You” by Janet Jackson and “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)” by C&C Music Factory.
