Minister’s Corner: Abiding in the tabernacle

By: DR. BRIAN DORE’

In Psalm 15, David asked the Lord, “Who shall abide in thy tabernacle? Who shall dwell in thy holy hill?” In David’s time, there were two tabernacles, the ancient one where the brazen altar remained at Gibeon, and the new one to which the ark had been remove on Mount Moriah and became the “holy hill.” You will find that in 1 Chronicles 15:1.
But David was not referring to priestly ritual or office, but of personal character before God. Therefore under the image drawn from the actual tabernacle, the real thought is of spiritual communion with God. What he was asking was, “Who is he who shall commune or fellowship with God as a child with his father, to whom Christ’s great promise shall be fulfilled?” What promise you say? The one recorded in John 14:23, which reads, “...if a man love me, he will keep my words and my father will love him and we will come unto him and make our abode with him.” David wanted to live perpetually in the presence of almighty God. For the man or woman of God, who has made a genuine commitment to Him, this is the desire of their heart. It is not how close we can get to God and still hold on to our sin, or continue to embrace the things of the world, but how we can empty ourselves of these things that we might dwell closer to Him and experience His transforming power in our lives.
