EPSO arrest woman for attempted murder of two police officers

Gazette Staff Report

On the evening of November 19, 2015, at approximately 8:55 p.m., an Evangeline Parish Deputy Sheriff attempted to stop a vehicle on U.S. 167 due to excessive speed in a 45 MPH.
The vehicle was traveling north on U.S. 167, heading into the City of Ville Platte. The deputy activated the emergency lights and siren and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The driver of the vehicle refused to stop and turned through the parking lot of the Burger King in an attempt to evade the deputy. The vehicle traveled through the parking lot at a high rate of speed which potentially endangered patrons of the restaurant.
The pursued continued onto neighborhood streets with the vehicle running stop signs and putting the lives of the motoring public in danger. The suspect’s vehicle eventually made its way to LA 29 (Chataignier Road) where it began traveling south in the northbound lane and forcing vehicles off of the roadway. The suspect vehicle then turned west onto LA 1161 (Pine Point Road) and continued traveling at a high rate of speed.
The driver lost control of the vehicle, traveling into a ditch. Deputies exited their patrol units and attempted to take the driver into custody. The driver then accelerated toward the deputies, striking one, pinning him between the suspect’s vehicle and the patrol vehicle. The driver then turned the vehicle toward the second deputy and attempted to run him over as well.
In response to these actions, the deputies fired their weapons in an attempt to bring the incident to an end. The driver of the vehicle was not struck and the pursuit resumed. A short time later, the suspect’s vehicle became disabled, stopping on Greenwood Road. Deputies conducted a felony stop and the driver was taken into custody without further incident. The suspect was transported to a local hospital where she was found to have no injuries.
The Evangeline Parish Deputy struck by the vehicle suffered moderate injuries, he was treated and later released from a local hospital. Thankfully, he is expected to make a full recovery. The Deputies were placed on Administrative Leave pending results of the internal investigations.
The driver of the vehicle was identified as 20 year old female from Sunshine, LA. Sandra Carry Ann Williams has been charged with two counts of Attempted First Degree Murder of a Police Officer, Aggravated Flight from an Officer, Careless Operation of a Motor Vehicle and Misrepresentation during Booking.
The driver is suspected to have been impaired at the time of this incident. Evidence has been collected from her and test results are pending. Charges of Impaired Driving are also pending. She is presently incarcerated at the Evangeline Parish Jail. Her bond has been set at $1,000,000.
Agencies that assisted with the Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Office were Louisiana State Police and Ville Platte Police Department.
