Dr. Charles Fontenot takes oath of office

Dr. Charles Fontenot just completed 25 years of service to Evangeline Parish as coroner, and Monday, March 24, he took his oath of office for another four years of service to Evangeline Parish. Fontenot became coroner in 1979, when he completed one year of an unexpired term. As he waited to take his oath Monday, which is administered on the fourth Monday of March after the fall election every four years, he pointed out how many governors had signed his certificates, which were hanging on his wall. In 1980, then Governor Dave Treen’s signature is on his certificate. In 1984, it was then Governor Edwin Edwards, and in 1988, it was then Governor Charles Elson “Buddy” Roemer. In 1992, Edwards signed once again. Then Fontenot stayed out of office from 1996 to 2000. In 2000, he became coroner again, and then Governor Mike Foster’s name appears on his certificate. In 2004, it was Kathleen Babineaux Blanco, and now, he will receive his certificate from the state with Governor Bobby Jindal’s signature. Fontenot welcome friends and members of the community to a small celebration, which was held after he took the oath of office from 13th Judicial District Judge John Larry Vidrine.
