The sorrows of two families this past year sound clear warning peals for those of us who will listen:

•Wear a life jacket when the water is cold.

•Slow down when the river’s running.

Progress on the launch pad

Many of St. Martin Parish’s hopes and expectations for 2008 took root in the last six months of 2007. Martin Mills, St. Martinville’s former underwear factory, started turning out storm-resistant and energy-efficient homes. Wal-Mart opened a super center near I-10 in Breaux Bridge.

2008 will be a busy year

Take a good look around if you’re the nostalgic type. Chances are things will look very different by this time in 2009.

Breaux Bridge will be taking on a decidedly more urban look as new businesses spring up along I-10.

The Employment Picture

Baton Rouge — Even though there were more people working in November 2007 than in October 2007, there were also more people looking for jobs — more people in the workforce, period — thus unemployment rose slightly between the two months.
