A long hard court season turned into a huge success for Evangeline Parish high school basketball.
For the first time in ages, all teams in the parish made it to the post-season. The icing on the cake for the parish was that two of those teams, the Ville Platte Lady Bulldogs and the Mamou Lady Demons, made it to the Top 28 in Hammond.
On top of that the Ville Platte High Bulldogs and the Mamou Demons both made deep runs, with each team making it to the quarterfinals.
And as always, with that team success comes individual success. Several of the parish players were awarded all-district honors at the end of the season.
Starting with District 5-3A, both the Pine Prairie Panther and Ville Platte Bulldog basketball teams had players named to the post-season team.
First team all-district performers included Pine Prairie’s Darnell Durgin and Ville Platte’s Tyran Jones.
Panthers selected to the second team were Sylus Carson and Isaiah Payne, while Bulldog guards Martin Jason and Jamal Byers were also named to that squad.
Pine Prairie’s Anthony Payne and Ville Platte’s Breshonski Jones were tabbed on the all-defensive team.
For the girls in District 5-3A, the Ville Platte Lady Bulldogs had two first team selections. Senior center Tyreonna Doucet and senior forward Miya McKinney were both named as first team performers.
In fact, Doucet proved her talent enough to be selected as the Most Valuable Player of the district.
Meanwhile, Pine Prairie’s Tori Bordelon was also given first team honors.
Ville Platte had one second team selection, as senior Keolgah Calvin was given that recognition.
Making the all-defensive team were Ville Platte High’s Jasmine Landry and Pine Prairie High’s Brittany Bellard.
In District 4-2A, the Mamou High Demon and Lady Demons had several players named as all-district performers.
Earning first team status for the Lady Demons was Ka’zhana Richard, while Darelzray Bellard was tabbed as a second team selection.
For the Demons, three players were given second team all-district honors, as center Russell Edwards, and forwards Lil’ Paul Williams and Tammrick Thomas made the list.
The Sacred Heart Trojans and the Lady Trojans both competed in the District 5-2A and also had players named to that districts all-league team.
The Trojans had a first team selection when senior Jacques Fontenot grabbed one of the five spots on that squad.
Also, senior Daniel Scully was honored by being named to the all-defensive squad.
The Lady Trojans picked up two first team selections, as seniors Erin Fontenot and Catherine Poche were each named to the top team.
Another senior, Sydney Shiver was a second team pick, while Moira Parks was named to the first team all-defensive squad.
Congratulations to all of these deserving players.
