PINE PRAIRIE – It did not take the Lady Panthers long to establish their dominance in a 6-0 District 5-3A opening win over the Church Point Lady Bears here Wednesday afternoon.
After holding Church Point scoreless in the top of the first inning, Pine Prairie exploded for four runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Lead off hitter Jacie McFarlain singled to start the inning. The very next batter, Julia Chaddrick reached on a bunt single, putting runners on first and second with no outs.
The third batter in the line-up, Macey Harvey flied out to center field, but it was deep enough to move McFarlain over to third base.
Clean-up hitter, Tori Johnson also bunted her way on, scoring McFarlain and moving Chaddrick up to third base. Johnson stole second, setting up a second and third situation with only one out.
Catcher Sara Tate was not able to bring anyone home as she popped up to the third baseman, creating two outs.
The next batter up, Tori Bordelon continued the theme of the inning, as she was also able to bunt her way on base, scoring Chaddrick to make it 2-0 and advancing Johnson to third. Bordelon stole second and set the tables for Karli Ortego.
Ortego promptly singled, plating both Johnson and Bordelon to extend the lead to 4-0. Marlee McDaniel ended the Lady Panther at bat by popping up the first baseman.
After another scoreless inning from the Lady Bears in the top half of the second, the Lady Panthers were able to tack on a single run in the bottom half of the inning.
This time it was Kailey Soileau crossing the plate. Soileau drew the lead off walk, which was followed by another base on ball issued to McFarlain. After an out, Soileau scored on a single off of the bat of Harvey to make the advantage 3-0.
Pine Prairie knocked in their final run of the game in the bottom of the third when Bordelon scooted across the plate on a passed ball.
Harvey led the way, going three for four at the plate.
Ortego picked up the win as she gave up no runs on one hit and struck out five in five innings on the mound.
