BATON ROUGE – A chance at a quarterfinal appearance slipped past the Sacred Heart here Monday night, as the Episcopal Lady Knights defeated the Lady Trojans 33-18 in a Division III regional round playoff game.
It was the first time the Lady Trojans had entered the regional round of the playoff since 2002.
After the game Sacred Heart head coach Stephanie Fontenot commented on her team’s effort all season long.
“It has been a season of patience for us,” stated Fontenot. “We have had to endure injuries and illness all year long, and tonight was no exception. I am just so proud of the effort of the players. But, I give credit where credit is do, Episcopal beat us up and down the floor tonight.”
Episcopal was playing there first game in their main gym, after suffering severe damage during the August floods. And the Lady Knights were not going to let that fact slip past them.
Episcopal took control of the game early on. The Lady Knights had four players score in the first quarter, as they jumped out to a 9-6 advantage after one quarter of play.
Sacred Heart got baskets from Catherine Poche and Moira Parks in the quarter.
The Lady Knights continued to dominate on the defensive side of the ball, holding the Lady Trojans to only four points in the second quarter. When the first half buzzer sounded, Episcopal held a 19-10 lead.
The final two quarters did not bode well for either team offensively. In those two periods, Episcopal outscored Sacred Heart 7-4 in each of the last two stanzas to close out the game.
“We are really going to miss the seniors on this team,” said Fontenot. “They really exemplified what it meant to be a true leader on and off of the court.”
