SHS Trojans run through Hornets

After walking through four opponents who they were expected to dominate, the Trojans of Sacred Heart went on the road to tangle with a Catholic of Pointe Coupee team that came into Friday night’s game with a 3-4 record. The Hornets dropped back-to-back contests against Pointe Coupee Central and St. Ed’s, but they were looking to getting back on the winning track against SHHS.
Sacred Heart survived an initial blow Friday night and went on to win by a score of 41-22 in Pt. Coupee. SHHS moves to 5-2 on the year and 3-0 in District 5-1A competition.
Sacred Heart drove the ball down the field to begin the game. Big runs from Wesley Fontenot, Ellis Parrot and Jacob Barnes helped the Trojans get the ball into the Catholic of Pt. Coupee red zone. The Hornets’ defense stood firm on a fourth and goal situation, moving the momentum to the Hornets.
After SHHS’ defense came up big and recovered a fumble, the Trojans moved across the field again. Parrot made a big run and helped the Trojans get set up in the Catholic red zone. For the second time in the game, the Hornets’ defense stood firm on a fourth and goal situation.
Catholic of Pt. Coupee came out throwing the ball down field and that exposed the Trojans for the moment. The Hornets got into the end zone on a short two-yard run. They botched the extra point snap, but managed to convert that mistake into a two-point conversion.
The 8-0 lead did not last long. The Trojans marched the football into the second quarter. They were coming right at the Hornets. It was an interception that got the ball back to the Trojans and they were not going to let this opportunity go by. The long drive was capped when Fontenot hit Parrott on a shuttle pass play for six points. Bevan Dupre hit the extra point, making it an 8-7 contest.
Staying in the second frame, the SHHS boys kept up their scoring ways. Grant Manuel intercepted a pass and that allowed Fontenot and company to get back to the work. The signal caller pulled his own card and moved the football all the way to the Catholic two-yard line. After three plays, the Trojans were looking at another fourth and goal situation. Fontenot made his feet do the talking and he ran it in from two yards away. Dupre missed the extra point, making it a 13-8 contest.
The Trojans would never lose the lead. A weak punt gave the boys in blue and gold great field position on their next possession. Mikey Laughlin made a huge run that moved SHHS into the red zone. Moments later, Fontenot hit Laughlin for a score. Dupre nailed the extra point, making it a 20-8 score going into the half.
It took just two plays for the Trojans to score on their first possession of the second half. Fontenot rolled out and found Parrot all alone. The speedster sprinted for 42 yards and got the football to the Catholic nine-yard line. Grant Manuel took a handoff from Fontenot on the next play and found the end zone easily. Dupre ripped the extra point, making it a 27-8 score.
The Hornets found a way to fire back. As the fourth quarter began, a series of pass plays moved Catholic into the end zone. The extra point good, making it a 27-15 ball game.
Sacred Heart answered back really quick. Fontenot found Parrot running down the sideline. The quick striking drive was iced when Manuel found himself back into the end zone. Dupre hit the extra point and made it a 34-15 game.
The Hornets did not stop playing. They battled back and scored on another pass play. The extra point kick was good, making it a 34-22 contest.
While the Hornets seemed to a have a little bit of momentum on their side and maybe even a thought of a comeback, Sacred Heart had a different idea. The Trojans recovered the attempted onsides kick with less than three minutes left on the clock. It took just three plays for Parrot to break for a 48-yard blast. The senior multiple role player scored six more points for SHHS and Dupre added the extra point.
Sacred Heart’s win gets them set to head back to Point Coupee Parish. This coming Friday, they meet the Cougars of Point Coupee Central. PCC is coming off of a 50-46 win over St. Edmund’s. The Cougars are undefeated in league play and they are 6-2 overall.
