MAMOU — It was total domination Wednesday afternoon for the Mamou Demon baseball team, as they showed no mercy in crushing the Opelousas Tigers 20-3 on Wednesday afternoon in a non-district contest.
The Demons only needed five innings to get the win and produced nine hits, including three extra base hits, to subdue the Tigers.
Both teams got off to a rather dubious start, with neither club able to score in the first inning. If fact, Mamou and Opelousas were put down in order in their initial at bats.
After Demon starting pitcher Landon Deshotels retired the side in the top of the second inning, the Mamou offense struck fast and hard in the bottom half of the inning.
The first two batters for the Demons, Tucker Rougeau and Blake Boone, reached base after being hit by the pitch. Keegan Reed then loaded the bases when the Opelousas pitcher could not handle a bunt for the error.
A single by Kaden Serie scored the first two runs for the Demons. A bunt single by Gavin Pommier loaded the bases once again for Mamou.
The next batter, Lil’ Paul Williams was hit by another pitch, making the score 3-0. An infield single from Ronnie McBride produced the fourth run of the inning.
Mason Reed followed by a solid single to the outfield plating two more runs and extending the lead to 6-0. That was followed by a fielder’s choice off of the bat of Austin Fontenot, allowing McBride to cross the plate for another run.
When Rougeau stepped to the plate again, the Demons had batted around. By the time the inning was complete, Mamou held a 10-0 lead.
Opelousas was able to pick up two runs in the top of the third, when Deshotels lost some control, as he walked three and gave up a single to the Tigers.
However, Mamou did not let those runs phase them. The Demons got back to work at the plate in the bottom of the third, scoring eight more runs.
In the inning McBride doubled twice as Mamou batted around again. Also picking up hits were Reed, who doubled and singled, and Boone.
Opelousas added their third and last run of the game in the top of the fourth.
The Demons finished the offensive onslaught by plating their final run of the game.
Afterwards, Mamou head coach Dale Serie was very enthusiastic about his team this season.
“We are very young this year, so some guys are having to step up earlier than we expected,” stated Serie. “Right not we are just trying to hit our stride before district starts next week.”
With the win Mamou improves to 8-5 on the season.
