MAMOU -- It was an extra inning affair here Tuesday afternoon, as the Mamou Lady Demons slipped past the DeQuincy Lady Tigers 7-6 in a key District 4-2A contest.
Mamou led 6-1 going into the fifth inning, but allowed DeQuincy to come back and tie the ball game in the top of the seventh.
But, the Lady Demons dug deep inside themselves and found a way to end the game in the bottom of the eighth to secure their seventh win in league play this season.
“I am very proud of the way this young team continued to fight the whole game through,” stated Mamou head coach Kim Manuel. “They fought through losing the lead and battled to get the victory today. We start seven freshmen, so it shows a lot of character for this club. My lone senior is really leading the team.”
DeQuincy opened the scoring in the top of the first by plating a single run.
The Lady Demons answered in the bottom of the first with a run of their own. Madison Fontenot doubled to lead things off and reached second on an error by the Lady Tiger shortstop. Fontenot then scored on a passed ball.
Mamou held DeQuincy scoreless in the top of the second and proceeded to open the game up by collecting five more runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 6-1 lead.
The Lady Demons were one batter shy of batting the order. The big hits for Mamou in that inning came from Angel Menier and Emily Soileau, both of whom doubled. Adding to the hits were Kaitee Bertrand and Fontenot, each one stroking singles.
That lead held until the top of the fifth, when the Lady Tigers were able to tack on four more runs, making the score 6-5.
DeQuincy tied the game up in the top of the seventh make the game a whole lot interesting.
In the bottom of the seventh, Mamou had a golden opportunity to score the winning run. The Lady Demons had runners at first and second with no outs after back-to-back singles from Sophia Fritz and Sydney Bruney.
Unfortunately, the Lady Demons could not push the victory sealing run across the plate, as the Lady Tigers were able to squelch the rally.
After getting DeQuincy in order in the top of the eighth, Mamou got the opportunity to put the game away.
With one out, Menier singled and reached second on a wild pitch. Soileau flied out to left field for the second out.
Menier was able to reach third on a passed ball and crossed home with the winning run on a single from Fritz.
Mamou is now 12-8 on the year and will secure the runner-up spot in district with a win over Vinton on Thursday.
