Trojans cruise by Panthers

The Sacred Heart Trojans pitched their second shutout in two weeks with a 30-0 win over Evangeline Parish opponent Pine Prairie. The Trojans blanked Mamou last week 40-0, marking their first win of the season and their first shutout.
Pine Prairie had a very tough time getting started on offense. The Panthers amounted just 35 yards of total offense in the game and never really threatened to score.
Sacred Heart played lights-out defense, which gave the SHHS offense a lot of chances to work with the football. When the game began, the Panthers forced the first turnover of the night when they recovered a fumble right before the Trojans scored.
However, the fumble bug turned around and bit the Panthers right back. They lost the ball on their own three-yard line, giving the ball back to the Trojans. The visiting team used just two plays before Grant Manuel punched the football into the end zone. Drake Doucet kicked the extra point, putting the Trojans up 7-0.
The Sacred Heart boys scored two more times in the second period. An impressive drive started things off for SHHS. They stored up an 11-play drive that consumed 73 yards and nearly nine minutes. Wesley Fontenot ended the drive with a 15-yard run into the end zone. Doucet added the extra point, making it a 14-0 contest.
The Panthers pushed the football up the field to the SHHS 35-yard line mid-way through the second quarter. That was one of the deepest penetrations by the PPHS offense. Unfortunately for the Panthers, the drive ended on a fourth down, giving the Trojans the ball back.
Sacred Heart put together a nine-play drive that gobbled up 65 yards and took just four minutes. Catches by Mikey Laughlin and Parrott kept the drive going. It ended when Fontenot hit Manuel for the third SHHS score of the night.
Sacred Heart took a 20-0 lead into the second half of the contest. The SHHS offensive unit started out the third period by putting an exclamation point on the contest. Their opening possession was not only impressive, but came up with six points  when Fontenot went in from one-yard out. The drive was good for 66 yards and took just seven plays.
Despite being down 27-0, the Panthers never quit playing hard. The PPHS boys’ determination nearly made the game look much closer. On both sides of the football, the Panthers kept coming at the Trojans.
Sacred Heart got their final points of the night when Drake Doucet hit a 32-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.
Offensively, Parrott led the Trojans with 91 yards on the ground and two scores. Manuel ended the night with 71 yards. Wesley Fontenot threw for 66 yards on six completions.
Douglas Fontenot led the Panthers with 24 yards collectively.
Sacred Heart will be heavy favorites next week when they host the North Central Hurricanes (1-4) to begin District 5-1A competition. Pine Prairie will host Church Point to start 5-3A league play. The Bears are 3-2 on the year.
“I was very impressed with the way we played tonight,” said second-year Head Coach Doug Guillory. “We tackled well and did the things we are supposed to do. Things are coming together.”
