RUSTON – The Lady Jays’ hopes of returning to the state tournament were dashed Friday afternoon as Cedar Creek cruised to a 9-1 victory of the St. Edmund softball team in the second round of Class 1A playoffs.

“They played well,” Lady Jay Head Coach Louise Johnson said after the game. “We knew going into it that they would be a tough team to beat, and they played a real good game.”

“They played well and we just didn’t play our best.”

With the win, number-two seed Cedar Creek (29-7-2) will advance to the state playoffs in Sulphur, where they’ll face Logansport Friday in the quarterfinal round.

The game started off with Lady Jay Ashlyn Deaville being hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a sacrifice, but the Lady Cougars’ defense shut the door on the scoring attempt.

In the second half, Cedar Creek’s pitcher Hayley Gaston took advantage of an error by Deaville to get on base, and later scored on another error.

The Lady Cougars added two runs each in the bottom of the third and fourth innings, to lead 5-0.

St. Eds scored their sole run in the top of the fifth, when Leah Andrus tripled and later stole home.

Cedar Creek silenced the Lady Jay bats through the rest of the game, while breaking out in the bottom of the sixth inning to score four more runs.

Gaston earned the win, pitching all seven innings and giving up one run off of three hits and no walks. Gaston struck out seven batters but had two hitbatsmen.

Andrus (16-11-1) took the loss for the Lady Jays, giving up nine runs off of 10 hits and two walks, while striking out seven batters in six innings.

The Lady Jays wrap up their 2008 season with a 17-13-1 overall record.
