4-H Rice and Sweet Potato Cookery winners announced

The 2015 Evangeline Parish Rice and Sweet Potato Cookery Contest was a big success! The contest was held Wednesday, January 7, at the Ville Platte Civic Center. Twenty-six dishes were entered in the Rice and Sweet Potato Contests. The Rice Cookery Contest was sponsored by the Evangeline Parish Rice Growers and the City of Ville Platte, and the Sweet Potato Contest was sponsored by E & L Produce.
Parish winners in the Rice Cookery will represent Evangeline Parish in the Regional 4-H Cookery Contests, which will be held in Crowley in April.
Parish winners in the Rice Cookery were:
Rice Main Dish: Emily Deshotel, Vidrine Elementary fifth grade, with One Pot Cabbage Casserole.
Rice Side Dish: Benjamin Fontenot, Sacred Heart Elementary fifth grade, with Golden Rice Salad.
Rice Dessert: Victoria Robert, Vidrine Elementary fifth grade, with Whipped Rice Pudding Dessert.
First place winners in the Sweet Potato Cookery will represent Evangeline Parish in the Regional 4-H Cookery Contest, which will be held in Alexandria in March.
Parish winners in the Sweet Potato Cookery were:
Sweet Potato Dessert Winners: Shayla Bellard, Sacred Heart Elementary fourth grade, with Yam Delight, first place; Victoria Robert, Vidrine Elementary fifth grade, second place; Emily Deshotel, Vidrine Elementary fifth grade, third place; Benjamin Fontenot, Sacred Heart Elementary fifth grade, fourth place; Johnathan Deshotel, Sacred Heart Elementary fifth grade, fifth place; and Gabe Fontenot, Sacred Heart Elementary fourth grade, honorable mention.
Other Sweet Potato Dishes Winners: Ella Ortego, Sacred Heart Elementary fourth grade, with Sweet Potato Pecan Logs, first place; Benjamin Fontenot, Sacred Heart Elementary fifth grade, second place; Jeanne Marie Fontenot, Sacred Heart Elementary seventh grade, third place; and Mattie Buller, Chataignier Elementary fifth grade, fourth place.
Other winners in the Rice categories were:

Blue Ribbon Winners - Benjamin Fontenot, Sacred Heart Elementary fifth grade.
