This week, we take a look back at April 1957.
• Governor Earl K. Long issued a proclamation ordering a special preferential election for residents of Turkey Creek to select officials for the village after the area became the fourth incorporated community in the parish following a December 1956 charter from the governor.
• Burnel Gene Fontenot, Alex Burtchman Clark, Alton Deville and Richard Gene Alexander were ordered by the Selective Service Board at Ville Platte to report for induction in the armed forces.
• John Sharel Fontenot, son of Mr. and Mrs. John C. Fontenot of Ville Platte, was appointed a member of the Vermilion Staff, Southwestern’s weekly newspaper.
• Jimmy Landreneau of Mamou High School, won the Grand Champion at the Evangeline Parish Broiler Day held in conjunction with the Chicken of Tomorrow Contest and the State Market Poultry Show.
• The family of Mrs. Camille Fontenot gathered at her home in St. Landry in celebration of her 77th birthday.
• Mr. and Mrs. Gussie Arnaud of Arnaudville announced the engagement of their daughter, Betty Joyce, to James A. Tubre Jr., son of Mrs. Bertha Tubre and James Arthur Tubre Sr. of Ville Platte.
• Wilma Joyce Davenport, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfonzo Davenport, married Donald W. Helmer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Helmer of Chicot.
• Yvonne Tujaque, Home Economist for CLECO in the Ville Platte District, held a lighting demonstration at Ville Platte High School. Those in attendance were the Home Economics Girls and Mrs. Alice Lasseigne, their teacher.
• Geraldine Davenport and Germaine Fontenot, both students at Sacred Heart High School, were chosen outstanding forward and guard on the 1st Annual All-Catholic Basketball Team.
• Susan Dupre, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Dupre, and Hilliard Saunders, son of Mr. and Mrs. A.B. Picou, all of Ville Platte, won first place in the boys and girls division of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus contest held in Opelousas.
• Basile All-State Class C Basketball players were Barbara Evans, senior forward, Collene Hutson, senior forward, and Margaret Manuel, sophomore guard.
