When the injury bug bites, it can be devastating to any team that gets bitten.
For the Mamou Demons, a team that already does not have the numbers to compete in Class 3A, that same injury bug has taken a huge toll on the outcome of the entire season.
“The injuries we have had this season have been devastating to us,” stated Mamou head coach Brian Brumfield. “When we started the year, we were already playing with a number of young players. Now, we are having to put in freshmen that have no game experience whatsoever. For us, it is hard to replace what is missing considering that we don’t have the numbers that the other schools in our district have. But, we are just going to have to throw these young guys into the fire and hope that they can give us some quality play.”
It does not get any easier for Mamou this week. The Demons will travel to Church Point on Friday to take on the Bears; the only team still undefeated in District 5-3A. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
Church Point sports an overall record of 6-1, with their only loss coming early on to the No. 10 ranked Kaplan Pirates. The Bears average 34.7 points per game on offense and give up 22.7 points per game on defense.
“Church Point is a very physical ball club,” said Brumfield. “The offensive line comes off the ball well and gives their backs good holes to run through. We are going to see a steady dose of their fullback, who runs with an attitude. Defensively, they are very sound and tackle well. It is going to be a tough match-up for us this week.”
