Mamou council discusses the installation of water meters

New water and gas meters were discussed at the Mamou Town Council Wednesday night.
Mayor Ricky Fontenot announced to the council the status of a water loan. “We’re continuing our efforts with USDA in applying for our water loan to redo our water system,” he said.
The mayor noted that in order to get the loan, the town will have to install water meters. “Some people are for it, and some people are not,” Fontenot said.
Fontenot went on to explain the stage as it stands now. “We are asking for some 10 to 15 volunteers so we can make a study and see what a normal water rate would be,” he said. “For example, if we will install a water meter, which the town will do, we’ll read it, but we’ll charge the regular price like what we’re doing now just so we can get an idea of what the consumption would be.”
A master gas meter was also discussed at the meeting. “Our plans are to section off at out gas system within four points so we can figure out where this gas is leaking from,” Fontenot said.
“We’ve been struggling with gas loss for 15 years now, and we’re just trying to address it,” he continued. “We’ve done a bunch of things to try to address it even replacing all of the residential meters with new meters, but we have no results yet. Some of the meters were 30, 40, or 50 years old, so they needed to be changed anyway. That’s the point where we are now.”
