MAMOU -- Moving up to Class 3A has not been an easy transition for the Mamou Demons this season.
First and foremost, the Demons do not have the numbers to compete against schools almost double in size. Secondly, Mamou is a relatively young ball club. Add to that a the multitude of injuries that have plagued the Demons all season long and one begins to see the mountains they have had to climb all year.
With that said, it was another hard fought loss Friday night for Mamou, as the Demons were outgunned by the Eunice Bobcats in a 53-8 loss.
With the loss, the Demons fell to 1-7 on the year and 1-4 in district competition.
Eunice did not need to pass the ball much in this contest. With the Bobcats outmanning Mamou up front, Eunice was able to rack up 333 yards of rushing, while holding the Demons to a negative 17 yards on the ground.
The first score of the game actually did not come via the Bobcat offense. Rather, it was the Eunice defense that turned in the first touchdown of the night when Dameon Frank picked off a pass and returned it for 40 yards and the score. The extra point was good, giving the Bobcats an early 7-0 lead.
Eunice answered that touchdown with an offensive score later on in the period. It was Frank once again that hit pay dirt, this time on an 11-yard run. Phillips nailed the extra point extending the Eunice lead to 14-0.
Mamou showed some life late in the first quarter. Landon Deshotel, who had been out with a broken thumb, hit wide out Nakarien Jack for a 67-yard pitch and catch, giving the Demons their only points of the night. Thomas Atkins ran in the two-point conversion and the lead was now cut down to 14-8.
But, Eunice did not let the early momentum from the Demons get in the way of their game plan. The Bobcats tacked on three more scores in the second quarter alone. The first was a six yard run by Bailey Richardson. A failed extra point attempt now made the score 27-8 in favor of Eunice.
The second touchdown of the period came on a Deon Ardoin three yard run. With the Phillips kick, the score moved to 34-8.
The final touchdown of the half for the Bobcats came courtesy of a Tevin Ceasar nine-yard run. The attempt failed once more, however, Eunice took a 40-8 lead into the locker room.
The Bobcats used the running game to their advantage mid-way through the third quarter. After a healthy drive, Bryson Poullard scored from five yards out. With the extra point, the score was now 47-8.
Eunice’s final score came in the fourth quarter when Simeon Ardoin sprinted into the end zone from 20 yards out.
Mamou will travel to Church Point to take on the Bears this coming Friday.
