LSU No. 1!

New Orleans – Two seniors from St. Martin Parish played key roles in LSU’s convincing 38-24 victory over Ohio State Monday night in the BCS National Championship game.

St. Martinville’s Early Doucet and Jonathan Zenon of Breaux Bridge were among the Tiger starters who helped LSU make football history as the first school to win two BCS titles since the series was instituted 10 years ago. Both were freshmen when LSU won the BCS championship in 2003.

Doucet, a wide receiver who missed much of the regular season with a groin injury, was LSU’s leading receiver against Ohio State, nabbing seven passes for 51 yards, including a 4-yard touchdown in the third quarter that stretched LSU’s lead to 31-10. He also had two carries for seven yards.

Zenon, a defensive back who made headlines when he returned an interception 18 yards for the winning touchdown against Tennessee in the SEC Championship game last month, finished with four solo tackles for the Bayou Bengals.

Other parish players on the 2007 LSU roster include senior defensive end Caleb Angelle, junior defensive tackle Charles Alexander and freshman cornerback John Williams, all of Breaux Bridge, and freshman placekicker Trent Hebert of Cecilia.
