Betty Jean Manley Newsom

MAMOU - Funeral services were held for Betty Jean Manley Newsom, 82, of Mamou, at the Ardoin’s Funeral Home Chapel in Mamou at 1 p.m., Wednesday, April 1. Burial followed in the First Baptist Cemetery.
Ms. Newsom died Sunday, March 29, 2015, at Oaklane Wellness and Rehabilitation Center in Eunice. She grew up in Smackever Arkansas. She married Marvin Guy Newsom Sr. in 1951, and they moved to Mamou in 1953, where they raised their family. She taught the Ladies Bible Study at the First Baptist Church in Ville Platte, where they were members for over 35 years. Mrs. Newsom worked as Town Clerk for the Town of Mamou for 20 years. She served on the Council of Aging and was a Pink Lady for Savoy Medical Center.
Survivors include one sister, Mary Manley Reed of Ashdown, Arkansas; four sons, Marvin Guy Newsom Jr. and his wife, Nancy, of Henderson, Colorado, James Newsom and his wife, Shannon, and Bryan Newsom and his wife, Michelle, all of Eunice, and Scott Newsom and his wife, Chasity, of Mamou; 10 grandchildren, Dr. Kyle Newsom and his wife, Bethany, of Shreveport, Aaron Newsom and his wife, Danielle, and Keri Beth Newsom, all of Lafayette, Lauren Martinez and her husband, Chris, of Greeley, Colorado, Frank Newsom of Henderson, Colorado, Katy James and her husband, Ryan, of Crowley, Ashley Newsom, Neil Newsom and Wesley Newsom, all of Eunice, and Samuel Newsom of Mamou; and four great-grandchildren, Karleigh and Erin Newsom, Greyson James and Adelyn Newsom, with one on the way.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Thelma Campbell and Ralph Nichols Manley; one son, Thomas Neil Newsom; and her husband, Marvin Guy Newsom Sr.
The family thanks Oak lane Wellness Center and Louisiana Hospice and Palliative Care for their compassion and care. In Lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Acadian Baptist Center at 1202 Academy Road, Eunice, La. 70535.
