EUNICE~It is with the heaviest of hearts and great sadness that the family of Dr. Ferdinand Joseph DeRouen, Jr. announces his passing on Monday, June 26, 2017 in the comfort of his home surrounded by his loving family. A Memorial Mass to honor the life and memory of Dr. F. J. “Brother” DeRouen, Jr. will be held at 3:00 pm at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Eunice on Friday, July 07, 2017 with Msgr. Romero Celebrant.
Dr. DeRouen was a graduate of St. Ed’s High School and attended LSU in Baton Rouge. In 1944 he joined the navy until the end of World World II then graduated LSU Med School in 1952. He moved to Basile to start his practice along with his wife, Joann who is an RN and was his first office nurse. He moved to Lafayette to study anesthesiology at Charity Hospital then moved back to his hometown of Eunice to reopen a practice in General Medicine. He was one of the last Doctor is in Eunice to make house calls and retired at the age of 72. Many people still tell his family that Dr. DeRouen “delivered me” and did so for several generations of families. Dr. DeRouen donated his body to LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans. He was a Tri Parish Bank Director’s Emeritus. He was an avid horseman, cattleman, fisherman and hunter, as well as a dog lover. He enjoyed spending time at his camp in Grand Chenier and loved everything about LSU.
Dr. DeRouen was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, great grandfather, friend and will be missed by all who knew and loved him, especially his loving wife of 64 years, Mary JoAnn Wolf DeRouen born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio where they met and married on July 01, 1952 after he finished his internship. A father to five children, Mark William DeRouen and wife, Debbie of Eunice; Leslie Louise DeRouen Harp of Lafayette, Barry James DeRouen and wife, Robin of Houston, Jeffery Joseph DeRouen and wife, Michelle of Eunice and deceased daughter, Carla Thresse (Tessie) DeRouen Young; his two sisters, Norma Langley and Sherry Larson and husband, Terry all of Eunice; nine grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; as well as extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, F.J. DeRouen, Sr. and Agnes Garbarino DeRouen and brothers, Rodney and Karl DeRouen and a sister, Mercedes Reed.
At the request of the family visitation will be held at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Eunice on Friday, July 7th from 1:30 until time of services. Deacon Gary Gaudin will recite a Rosary at 2:15 pm.
In lieu of flowers family ask to donate to St. Jude’s Children Hospital, LSU or St. Anthony/Annunciation Catholic Church.
