LAFAYETTE - Funeral services were held for Joseph Russell Ardoin, 76, of Lafayette, at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Lafayette at 2 p.m., Sunday, October 13. Burial followed in the St. Peter Roman Catholic Church Cemetery in Carencro.
Mr. Ardoin died Wednesday, October 9, 2013, at Lafayette General Medical Center. He was born in Ville Platte to Merrick and Marie Ardoin on September 15, 1937. He was married to the former, Wyvonne “Wy” Fontenot, his high school sweetheart, for 56 years having been a resident of Lafayette for 48 years. She and his children and grandchildren were the love of his life. He was so proud of them all and loved them deeply. Mr. Ardoin was a parishioner and founding member of St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Lafayette. He was in sales until his retirement and was a volunteer at the Lafayette Tourist Center and with Hospice of Acadiana. He was a people person and never met a stranger and was very proud of his Cajun heritage. He loved sports and coached T-Ball in earlier years and was a high school football official for 42 years. He played tennis for many years and made “forever” friends in football and tennis. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to all.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, the former Wyvonne “Wy” Fontenot; four sons, Steve Ardoin and his wife, Janet, of Cecilia, Daniel Ardoin of Grand Coteau and Michael Ardoin and his wife, Charlotte, and Paul Ardoin, all of Carencro; 10 grandchildren, Ryan Ardoin, Chanter Broussard, Julian Ardoin, Jessica Ardoin, Mathew Ardoin, Christopher Ardoin, Timothy Ardoin, Kori Ardoin, Jeremy Tate and Merrick Ardoin; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Merrick Ardoin and the former Marie Welch; and two sons, Blaine Ardoin and Gregory Ardoin.
Readers were Mathew Ardoin and Penny Berthelot.
Gift bearers were Jessica Ardoin, Kori Ardoin and Chanter Broussard.
Pall bearers were Steve Ardoin, Daniel Ardoin, Ryan Ardoin, Mathew Ardoin, Christopher Ardoin, Julian Ardoin, Merrick Ardoin and Chris Cornes. Honorary pall bearers were L.D. Aucoin, L.J. Boudreaux, Bob Nelson, Wade Brignac, Jules Fontenot, Chelie Barnes, David Tate, Jeremy Tate, Herb Thayer, Tim Ardoin, Ellis Romero and the Lafayette Football Association officials.
Rev. Gary Schexnayder officiated.
Melancon Funeral Home of Carencro was in charge of arrangements.
