Parish recycling program underway

Four area recycling locations are now available around the parish, compliments of the Vermilion Parish Police Jury and the Department of Public Works Solid Waste facility.

A schedule has been developed and the manned “traveling” center will be available for all parish residents to dispose of recyclable items such as newspapers, cans and bottles.

In addition, tires may be brought to the location. Each resident may bring five tires per day, but must also produce their driver’s license.

The jury has hired Tosha Breaux to oversee the recycling activities at each site. She will assist the public with the operation and collection of newspapers, cardboard, aluminum cans, plastics, magazines, glass, steel and tin cans to the appropriate containers.

Placed at each barn are 96 gallon cans like the ones used to pick up household waste with the appropriate labels for each item.

“I will be here to help the public in any way I can,” Breaux stated on her first day at Barn #1 in Erath.

She was still waiting for the first “recycler” to come through the gates, but did mention that some barn employees brought their recyclables with them that morning and deposited them in the appropriate cans.

The schedule for monitored recycling is as follows:

Monday - Erath Area Police Jruy Barn #1, Mack Switch Road.

Tuesday - Abbeville Area Police Jury Barn #2, Calvin LeBouef Road.

Wednesday - Gueydan Area Police Jury Barn #3, Hwy 14 between Wright and Gueydan.

Thursday - Kaplan Area Police Jury Barn #4, Gladu Road off Hwy 343.
