SM Tigers fall to Vikings, but bounce back against BC Gators

The St. Martinville Tigers suffered their first District 5-4A loss last week, falling to the league-leading Northside Vikings, but got back into the win column on Friday by beating Beau Chene 53-43.

Last week’s action left coach Darrel Mitchell’s squad with a 16-10, 3-1 worksheet.

In other 5-4A action Breaux Bridge fell hard to Abbeville in the Tigers’ only game last week. The Bridge now stands at 4-15 overall and are winless in three district outings.

Meanwhile, Cecilia continued its pre-district schedule, defeating Brusly and Jennings to break the .500 mark for the year at 11-10.

Playing on the road, the Tigers struggled through a cold-shooting second quarter on their way to defeat at the hands of the Vikings, who are 17-3, 4-0 for the season.

The ’Ville trailed by only one at the end of the first period but hit only five points in the second while Northside poured in 14 to open a 30-20 lead over their visitors at intermission.

The Viking stretched their lead to 14 points going into the final stanza but SM rallied down the stretch to make the final score a little more respectable.

Sophomore Lance Charles led the Tigers with 19 points while Terence Bonhomme and Cordel Phillip rounded out the double figure scoring with 12 apiece.

SMSH 53, BCHS 43

With junior Terence Bonhomme sidelined by an ankle sprain, the Tigers looked to their younger players for help on Friday against Beau Chene and freshman Dieone Narcisse responded with an eight-point effort.

After a slow start The ’Ville managed to open a 25-19 halftime lead and never looked back on their way to the 10-point win.

Sophomore Lance Charles once again led the way with 18 points while seniors Cordel Phillip (15 points) and Melvin Neveu (4 points, six rebounds, three steals and an assist) provided the experience.

Abbeville 57, BBHS 34

Breaux Bridge managed to stay within striking distance in the early going, trailing only 23-16 at intermission. But the visiting Wildcats turned up the tempo in the third stanza, outscoring their hosts 21-6 to blow the game open.

Anthony Lewis and Churphy Stewart led the Tigers with 7 points apiece.

Cecilia 56, Jennings 50

The Bulldogs notched their third straight win last Friday at home in another non-district contest.

Cecilia scored nine unanswered points in the opening minutes and held a comfortable 29-22 halftime lead. But Jennings regrouped during intermission and outscored Cecilia 18-11 in the third stanza to knot the score at 40-all going into the final period.

But the Bulldogs rallied down the stretch to hold off their visitors.

Marcus Wiltz and Kendrick Jeffery led the ’Dogs with 15 and 10 points, respectively.

Upcoming Action

This Friday night will see St. Martinville and Breaux Bridge on the road, with The ’Ville playing a non-district game against Vermilion Catholic and The Bridge visiting Teurlings Catholic. Cecilia will be at home for a District 6-3A game against Erath.

Next Tuesday, Jan. 22, St. Martinville travels again, this time to Abbeville. BB and Cecilia will both be at home, with the Tigers hosting Northside and the Bulldogs entertaining Rayne.
