Former Louisiana Sen. Elbert Guillory (R-Opelousas) has announced that he is running for the U.S. House of Representatives.
The 71-year-old Guillory is seeking to replace Rep. John Fleming (R), who currently holds the 4th District seat for Louisiana. Fleming has announced that he is running for the U.S. Senate to replace David Vitter, who is retiring.
Guillory said in a statement on his website http://www.elbertguillory.com/congress/ that “America is at an important crossroads. Americans must make a decision to embrace personal freedoms, free market, capitalism, and basic American values or continue this errant journey toward European-style nanny state collectivism,” added Guillory. “In Congress, I will be a voice for liberty. We have a duty to preserve America.”
Guillory was elected to District 24 in the state senate during a special election back in May of 2009, and then reelected in 2011. That term ended this January.
Guillory, who switched from the Democratic Party to Republican in 2013, ran for Lieutenant Governor this past fall, but failed to make the runoff as he finished in fourth. Guillory eventually endorsed the eventual winner Billy Nungesser.
Guillory previously served as the Louisiana Representative for District 40 from 2006-2009.
The Opelousas native has practiced law for four decades, served as Chairman of the Senate’s Retirement Committee and is also a Navy Veteran.
