This patch of sugar cane recently harvested near Morbihan may look strange, but it’s not a strange new variety or a genetically modified crop. According to St. Martin County Agent Alfred Guidry, it’s just normal cane that was allowed some extra time in the field during a warm spell. The flowers, that Guidry say are very sticky to the touch, need ample heat to bloom near the end of the plant’s maturing period. (Photo courtesy of Joseph “Sing” Bonin)
