I stand corrected. I wrote several weeks back that there had never been a white Christmas in Acadiana. Eddie Broussard sends a note reminding me that a good part of coastal Louisiana woke up to snow on Christmas Day in 2004, and sends along pictures of his home on Pecan Island to prove it.

If you have roots in north St. Landry or Evangeline parishes, the chances are pretty good that you are a Soileau or kin to one. But the family may never have made it to south Louisiana if the first of the clan to come to these parts hadn’t been able to escape a Natchez Indian massacre.

Funeral services were held for Dempsey Murphy Jr., 81, of Mamou, at Zion Travelers Baptist Church in Mamou at 7 p.m., Sunday, December 27. Burial was held at 10 a.m., Monday, December 28, in the church cemetery.

Funeral services were held for Ivory Thomas, 73, of Ville Platte, at Disciples Baptist Church in Ville Platte at 11 a.m., Saturday, January 9. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

On Tuesday, December 8, the Mamou Elementary 4-H Club officers delivered over 1,200 non perishable food items to the Food for Families Food Drive at St. Ann’s Catholic Church. The club conducted the school-wide food drive as one of their Service Learning Projects for the year.
