A three-point deficit with 2:09 seconds left in the first half turned into an 11-point Trojan loss, as they hosted the Vermilion Catholic Eagles on Monday in a non-district contest.

Playing on the road Monday against class 5A Walker High School allowed the Ville Platte Bulldogs to raise their record to 8-7, as they defeated the Wildcats 70-55. The Bulldogs used a 13 point advantage in the first quarter to claim victory over Walker.

How do you stop a 6’5”, 250 pound opposing center? For the undersized Sacred Heart Trojans, there was no answer. The Northwood of Lena center, Michael Layssard, poured in 24 points, as the Gators handed the Trojans an 82-46 loss at Sacred Heart on Friday.

The Sacred Heart Lady Trojans hosted the Northwood Lady Gators on Friday night in a non-district match-up. The Lady Trojans started slow, but finished with a flurry in running away with a 56-25 win. The win gives Sacred Heart a 6-7 record on the year.

An undefeated season is a goal that all teams seek as a new season kicks off. The Ville Platte Lady Bulldogs were one of the teams who sought that goal. However, a key injury to sophomore standout Tyreonna Doucet has aided in stopping that goal from being reached.

The Pine Prairie Panthers and Lady Panthers went on the road Thursday to take on Plainview High School in a non-district match-up. The Lady Panthers were outmatched as they fell 74-37 to the Lady Hornets. The Panthers continued their hot streak, as they upended the Hornets 56-46.

The Pine Prairie Panthers and Lady Panthers opened play in their annual tournament on Wednesday. A total of seven boys and seven girls’ teams came to Pine Prairie to vie for the championship title, which will be decided on Saturday.

The Pine Prairie Panthers and Lady Panthers hosted the Sacred Heart basketball squads on Tuesday night in non-district play. The Lady Panthers shot lights out in a 42-39 win. The Panthers scored double figures in every quarter in an 80-73 win.

The Mamou Demons travelled to Church Point on Tuesday to take on the Bears. The Demons overcame a slow start to tie the game in the fourth quarter. The effort to send the game into overtime drained Mamou, as they fell 62-59 in the extra period.

Success in any endeavor sometimes comes in small increments. For this year’s Evangeline Parish football teams, success came in many forms. Basile found their success in a season marked by returning to the quarterfinals. Pine Prairie won more games this year than in the history of their program.
