Fall leaves and pumpkin come to mind as the air begins to cool and fall weather really sets in. A new season brings about fresh ideas for outside things to do. Planting a fall garden in our dementia unit is always a favorite activity for the residents.

Infectious diseases are disorders caused by organisms, such as bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites. Many organisms live in and on our bodies. They are normally harmless and even sometimes helpful, but under certain conditions, they may cause disease.

Happy Grandparents Day to all from the staff and residents of Heritage Manor. In 1970, a housewife from West Virginia initiated a campaign to set aside a special day for grandparents. Marian McQuade was a mother of 15 and had 40 grandchildren.

Many years ago I read about a massive oak tree. I can’t remember the source. However, I remember that a vine had grown up along its trunk. This vine started small, but over the years it got taller and taller.

The celebration of the first Labor Day was held on September 5, 1882, in New York City, New York. More than 10,000 people, including members of the Central Labor Union and other citizens marched in a parade. Following the parade, people gathered in a park for speeches, a picnic and concert.

There are many reasons why the elderly are at risk for weight loss, decreased appetite, illness, dental problems, cognitive decline and decline in the sense of smell and taste. Incorporating food programs in activities encourages residents to share recipes, reminisce and exchange food ideas.

GERD is the term used for gastro-esophogeal reflux disease. Acids and enzymes in the stomach flow backwards into the esophagus. GERD produces a variety of symptoms and can be occasional or reptitive. It affects at least 25 percent of the US population.
