When the fifth seeded Lady Trojans drew the Lady Gators of Northwood-Lena, they knew they would have no problem winning in the first round of the Class 1A playoffs.

The 11th seeded team in Class 2A, Mamou, earned a 5-1 win over the Sterlington Lady Panthers Tuesday in Mamou. The victory was impressive over a very tough Sterlington team that has always managed to be very tough on teams in the first round of the playoffs.

Pine Prairie, the 15th seed in Class 3A, slid by the 18th seed Cladwell by a score of 3-2 to advance in the Class 3A playoffs. It was the first ever Class 3A playoff win for the school.

His final words last season were, “Next year, its Sulphur or bust.” That was Sacred Heart Head Coach Doug Guillory’s final words after a 6-3 loss to St. John in the second round of the Class 1A playoffs.

Mamou is coming off of a great regular season. They won District 4-2A and they did it with a perfect undefeated record. Pine Prairie competed in their first year in Class 3A and finished in a three-way tie for first place in District 5-3A.

The Mamou Lady Green Demons have a goal of getting back to Sulphur and having a shot at the Class 2A State Championship. Last season, they had a strong season right out of the starting gate, but then faltered a little as the season came to a close.

It was another tremendous year for the five basketball schools in Evangeline Parish. Several schools made it to the post-season in their respective classes. In Class 1A through 3A, at least one Evangeline Parish school represented the area.

It was a positive year all the way around for the boy’s and girl’s basketball teams at Sacred Heart High School. Both squads were really competitive and battled well on the court all season.

The Lady Panthers of Pine Prairie maintained their position right in the middle of the Class 3A power ratings by splitting a pair of league games last week. They fell to Church Point, but managed to rebound and get the win over Livonia.
