29ers battle for district title

The Gulf Coast Bank Abbeville 29ers have had a little time to think about the last time they faced the New Iberia Cajuns.

The 29ers dropped an 11-5 decision at home to New Iberia on July 1, a game Abbeville coach Kip Faulk said the team would love to have back.

“It was a game,” said Faulk, “that we really beat ourselves. We were winning the entire way through and we just dropped the ball at the end.

“It has been a little disappointing to sit back. It has been brewing.”

With that said, the 29ers have an opportunity to make things right. Abbeville will travel to Acadian Park in New Iberia Monday to once again take on the Cajuns at 7 p.m. The game takes on a bit more meaning than the pervious three games, two of which the Cajuns came out on top.

If the Cajuns win, NI will head into regionals at district champion. If the 29ers come out on top, the two teams will go into the playoffs as co-district champs.

“The good thing,” said Faulk, “is that we control our own destiny.”

Either way, each team will head into the eight-team regional, which begins at Acadian Park on July 17. Faulk said his team can pull out all of the stops on Monday, at the same time the coaches must ration pitching.

“We have to take care of arms,” said Faulk. “But it will be like any other game, we have to do the small things.”
