Acadia VFC meets
Governor Bobby Jindal officially declares April 27 through May 3 as Louisiana Volunteers For Family and Community, Inc. Week in a signed proclamation. The Acadia Volunteers for Family and Community members dedicate themselves to community service. AVFC Family Life Chairman, Mary Ann Sagrera, in charge of CVU (volunteer hours), said that Acadia VFC members volunteered 9,826 hours and reached 40,039 people in 2007.
The Acadia Volunteers for Family and Community Council meeting was held on April 23, at the Rice Palace. Ruth Ann Klumpp, vice president for public policy; presided over the meeting.
In opening exercises, Gloria Gaspard, Iota VFC; lead the members in the Pledge of Allegiance and JoAnn Dupuis, Roberts Cove VFC President; in reciting the VFC Club Collect. AVFC Secretary Kay LaFleur called the roll and circulated the minutes of the last meeting. In the absence of AVFC Treasurer, Diana Francis, Rosie Trahan gave the financial report. Recreation Chairman Helen LeBlanc was in charge of registration and door prize.
In unfinished business, reports were heard on these activities: Club presidents told of Arbor Day endeavors by VFC members, strawberry sales fund raiser, CVU (volunteer) hours by Chairman Mary Ann Sagrera, and State Convention registration.
Many new business items were covered as follows: Night Club VFC will host the 2008 AVFC Achievement Day to be held May 22. Rosie Trahan, Night Club president; told of the plans for this event. Kay LaFleur announced that LVFC is sponsoring a Legislative Day in Baton Rouge on June 3 and a letter will be sent to let all members know the particulars. Registration for this day is May 15. Klumpp discussed the Area 4 Day which is being hosted by Acadia VFC this year and will be held June 5 in Crowley.
Seven parishes make up Area 4 and includes Acadia, Beauregard, Evangeline, Jeff Davis, Lafayette, St. Martin and Vermilion parishes.
The annual Baby Sitters Workshop will be held June 10 and members were asked to help for this activity. Scholarships committee report was also given by Klumpp.
Several members served as judges in other VFC and 4-H activities in Acadia and other parishes.
Plans for the VFC fall luncheon to be held in November was given by JoAnn Dupuis, Roberts Cove VFC; and Mary Ann Sagrera told of plans for Night Club sponsored Celebrate the Flavors of Rice to be held September 3.
The State Convention was held in Monroe, April 15-17. In a special presentation, Josie Thevis, Roberts Cove VFC; received a certificate for being a member for 50 years. Thevis is Acadia’s Heart of VFC and was Acadia’s nominee for the LVFC Heart of VFC award.

Following the meeting, two show and tell presentations were given. Kay LaFleur showed how to make a clever quick and easy casserole carrier; and Rosie Trahan and Helen LeBlanc gave the how-to of a netted pot cleaner they called a Scrub-a-Dub-Dub.
