Blue Jays explode past Hornets

A third-inning breakout helped the St. Edmund Blue Jays come from behind to beat rivals Catholic High of Pointe Coupee 13-3 after five innings and remain undefeated in District 6-1A competition.
Catholic High drew first blood with one run in the top of the first inning, but the Jays managed to tie the score in the second half.
Catholic quickly retook the lead, scoring one run each in the second and third innings to lead 3-1.
In the bottom half, after two outs, Wesley Richard stole third and was driven home on Jeff Fontenot’s base hit.
Later, Trevor Hargroder doubled to drive in two runs, giving St. Eds a 4-3 lead.
Edward Turk and Ryan Johnson each singled to drive in one run, and Mac Manuel doubled for one run before Catholic could close out the inning with a 7-3 Blue Jay lead.
After that, Manuel and the Blue Jay defense silenced the Hornets’ bats while the Jays added two more runs in the bottom of the second and four more in the bottom of the fifth to force the 10-run mercy rule ending.
Manuel, back on the mound after an injury, pitched the win for St. Eds, giving up three earned runs off of five hits and five walks, while striking out five batters.
The Jays host Acadiana Prep at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
