Boy Scouts of America the subject at Rotary

CROWLEY – Jim Rees and Frank Bradshaw were guest speakers at Tuesday’s meeting of the Crowley Rotary Club. They spoke about the Boy Scouts of America, an organization that is approaching it’s one hundredth anniversary.

The slogan of scouting is “Do a good turn dailey” and one of the goals of the Boy Scouts is making the world a better place to live. Frank Bradshaw stated that the Boy Scouts give young people a lot of skills needed in life.

According to Jim Rees, Scout Executive of the Evangeline Area Council, it has been proven that leadership traits evolve through scouting.

Rees stated that the Acadia District includes about 436 scouts, as of last year, and about 25 scout units. The size of the district will be increasing due to the addition of Eunice, Basile and Gueydan.

One challenge the Boy Scouts face, stated Rees, is finding adult leadership.

“The future of this club depends on a spirit of volunteerism,” stated Rees.

Volunteering, stated Bradshaw, is one way of showing support to the Scouts, also adding that the organizations main focus is not on money, although donations are appreciated.

Rees added that the district has qualified for a mid-year award for growth in the area.

The registration fee to become a scout is only $11 per year, but the rewards are limitless.

“We teach them at an early age that you have to work to make something good happen,” said Rees.
