CHS, SMSH secure post-season berths
The Cecilia Bulldogs close regular season play with a 19-12, 7-2 record and earn the No. 2 seed for the District 6-3A playoff bracket.
Though topping North Vermilion earlier in the week, the ‘Dogs could not avenge their only district loss to Catholic High-New Iberia Friday when the Panthers traveled to Cecilia and clinched the No. 1 spot in a nailbiter ending in overtime.
The St. Martinville Tigers also earned a playoff berth, despite losing their final regular season contest to Abbeville. Coach Darrell Mitchell’s squad clinched fourth place and the district’s wild-card spot in 5-4A play.
Breaux Bridge fell hard to the Northside Vikings in a one-sided contest Friday for the season’s capstone game. With that loss, and the previous to Teurlings in the final week of regular season play, the Tigers dropped their dismal record to 6-22, 2-10.
Teurlings 53, BBHS 44
Breaux Bridge — Though leading 22-16 at the half, the Tigers could not hold on to clinch a repeat victory against the Rebels. Teurlings’ shooters, led by Brent Owens, picked up the pace in the second half to outscore Breaux Bridge despite the Tigers’ valiant efforts.
CHS 49, N. Vermilion 24
Maurice — The Patriots gave the ‘Dogs little trouble posting merely single-digit totals for each quarter last Tuesday for the 49-24 Cecilia victory.
Cecilia’s double-digit scorers, Arille Alex and Larry Fredrick combined for 31 points in the district contest.
Catholic-NI 61, Cecilia 59
Cecilia — The Panthers handed the Bulldogs their only previous district loss in January. Though hungry for vengeance, Marty Lewis’ team could not hold on in overtime play to clinch the victory.
Out of the gate the ‘Dogs looked strong outscoring Panthers’ shooters 24-11 and leading by nine at the half. Scoring dwindled on both sides of the court for a defensive battle in the third quarter but, the Panthers closed the gap in the fourth closing regulation play tied at 53-53.
CHNI squeaked by scoring eight point to Cecilia’s six in overtime play to notch the victory.
Abbeville 63, SMSH 52
St. Martinville — Abbeville earned the third place and final automatic spot in the District 5-4A playoffs defeating the Tigers in the season closer 63-52.
During the up-and-down scoring battle, the ‘Cats led at the end of each quarter by toppling the Tiger’s defensive arsenal and pulling away not allowing the ‘Ville any closer than seven points from victory.
The Wildcats’ leading scorer, DeAnthony Carter, sunk 13 shots in the paint for a game-high 26-point performance. Tigers top shooter and only double-digit scorer, Cordel Philip, tallied 21 points in defeat.
Northside 91, BBHS 27
Breaux Bridge— The Vikings handed Breaux Bridge the season’s final sobering defeat by a season-leading 64-point spread.
Northside’s Victor Jackson led the Vikings shooters with 36 points, while the Breaux Bridge offense was held to single-digit scoring in all four quarters.
