City has new tax collector

Nadenia Fabacher has been appointed the city’s tax collector, adding to her duties in the Building Inspector’s Office.

The City Council confirmed Mayor Bob Morris’ assignment of the duties at its March meeting.

Former Tax Collector and Assistant City Clerk Earlene LeJeune was named city clerk last month.

In other action, the council:

Condemned property at 260 East Oak and 401 Mayer, learned a permit has been secured to demolish property at 211 South MLK and that razing of 300 North CC Duson has been completed.

Adopted an ordinance providing for stop signs on North 2nd at Camellia, making it a four-way stop.

Introduced an ordinance for providing a stop sign at Boudreaux & Childs.

Adopted a formal policy for use of the council meeting room by interested non-profit groups on a first-come, first-serve reservation basis. The meeting room adjacent to the mayor’s office is not available for non-city meetings.

Accepted a state grant for construction an access control gate and improving security fencing for the north apron at the airport.

Accepted a petition for annexation of a tract on West Laurel on which the owner proposes to build a Holiday Inn Express.

Proposed to abandon unopened streets in New Gourney addition, including Lonnie, Blanche and Stephanie.

Declared a number of items surplus and to be offered for sale. They include a 1996 Mercury, police department cell phones, a number of items from the fire department and scrapped gas meters.
