Heritage Manor News: Creative thoughts
(Editor’s Note: The following article was submitted by Patricia Duplechin, resident activity director at Heritage Manor Nursing Home in Ville Platte. This column runs every Sunday in The Gazette.)
Each day, without knowing it, we experience thought provoking moments. We all do this as we look at a painting, smell a campfire, share a hug or hold a newborn baby. For the low-functioning residents, enhancing their sensory experience is a great way to do this. The aroma of food, as when we do our monthly cookie baking with residents, is an example. Nature is another great way of making us stop to take notice, as when we go on our monthly rides in the park with the dementia unit residents. Sharing photographs or a story of their lives, places visited or achievements of their past is a great way to get to know them more personally and make them feel loved and appreciated. We learn so much at our happy hour of reminiscing time and make each other laugh. There is always one more story to tell or one more idea to share. We love spending time together in the activity room and getting to know our residents on a personal level. It makes not only their day brighter, but ours as well.
