Heritage Manor News: Depression versus anxiety

Depression and anxiety are both mood disorders that occur in the older adult. Sometimes they occur at the same time. Both disorders can affect an individual’s quality of life. Depression is described as a disturbance in mood, which is characterized by sadness and may interfere with the individual’s ability to function. Anxiety is a mood disorder that is characterized by excessive worry and feelings of apprehension, panic or dread. At times, symptoms of nervous system arousal, such as heart palpitations, dry mouth and muscle tension, can also inhibit an individual’s ability to function. There are many types of depression, including bipolar disorder. Some risk factors include alcohol and substance abuse, family history of depression, the loss of spouse, family members or job. Symptoms include difficulty getting along with others, increased isolation, inattention to self hygiene or appearance, weight loss or gain and sometimes recurrent thoughts of death or suicidal ideas. Individuals feeling this way should seek medical attention quickly to start treatment as soon as possible.
