Heritage Manor News: Happy Fourth of July!
On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence. On July 2, the members voted for independence, passing a resolution that “these United Colonies are and right ought to be free and independent states.” It took the delegates two days to agree to a formal document announcing their actions. The Continental Congress president John Hancock and secretary Charles Thompson signed the rough draft that day. The official signing of the Declaration of Independence took place on August 2, 1776, by the 55 other delegates.
