Heritage Manor News: Hearing loss

Hearing loss that occurs as we age is common. Hearing loss is the deterioration of hearing and deafness is profound hearing loss. It is estimated that one-third of people age 65 and over have some type of hearing loss. It has an effect on the quality of life of the individual, as it interferes with the ability to hear and understand speech. Many elderly who have hearing loss also have visual loss, and the combination can have an effect on their safety and ability to perform everyday tasks. Damage to the inner ear can be caused by aging and prolonged exposure to loud noises. Ear infections and abnormal bone growth can result in hearing loss, as well as build up of ear wax. A ruptured eardrum can be caused by loud blasts of noise, sudden change in air pressure or poking the eardrum with a sharp object. Some medications are toxic to the ear and can result in hearing loss. The treating of hearing loss depends on the cause. The most common form is the use of hearing aids. When speaking to someone who is impaired, you should face the individual, speak clearly and loudly and decrease background noise.
