Heritage Manor News: Hip replacements
Total hip replacements are often needed in individuals whose pain interferes with their daily way of life. They are also indicated when methods of physical therapy, injections to the hip joint and pain medication have failed to relieve the pain. Damage to the hip joint from osteoarthritis is the most common reason for hip replacement surgery. Other causes include rheumatoid arthritis, traumatic arthritis, fractures of the hip, bone tumors or bone deformity. Individuals who consider hip replacement surgery often have pain that persists or worsens with walking. The goal of hip replacement is increasing mobility and relieving pain. There is always the chance of major complications and of course the process of recovery and rehabilitation. Full recovery takes about three to six months. Blood clots are the most common complication, and infections may occur right after surgery, during recovery or years later.
