Heritage Manor News: Short stay residents
Recreation and activity professionals often hear “I won’t be staying here very long.” In many care centers, the term “resident” is no longer an appropriate reference. The individuals who come into care centers for rehabilitation do not identify themselves as “residing” in the care center. These individuals often prefer to call themselves “patients.” Many skilled nursing facilities have increasing numbers of patients moving in for short-term rehab stays. Recreation and activity programs often need to be redesigned to meet these changing needs. The rehab environment in skilled nursing centers can be very similar to the acute hospital environment. Often, short-term residents refuse to attend group activities, saying they want to concentrate on medical care only. Their goal is to get strong and resume normal life back at their own homes. We provide one on one visits, reading material, touch therapy and music and spiritual tapes.
The staff of Heritage Manor wishes a Happy Birthday this week to Nathalie Fontenot and Lou Ella Fontenot.
The staff is selling raffle tickets in the activity department to raise funds for the annual resident casino buffet trip. Tickets are $1 each or 12 for $10. First prize is a two-burner stove on a stand. Second prize is an ice cooler filled with summer picnic goodies. Third prize is a $10 Wal-Mart gift card. If you are interested in purchasing tickets, please call the facility or come by and ask for the activity department. Many thanks to Karen Perron and Delana Brown for helping out in the activities department during the Senior Olympics weekend. The residents had a great time and took home four medals (three first place winners and one third place winner).
