Dragons blast Eunice in seventh inning

DERIDDER – The Bobcats allowed one run in the seventh inning that cost them second place in District 4-4A, as Eunice High dropped a 2-1 decision to the Dragons.
With the loss, Eunice (18-12; 8-4) finishes third in the district, behind DeRidder (19-13; 9-3) and district champion Sam Houston (24-7; 10-2).
Dragon Sam Pterson led off the bottom of the first inning with a walk, stealing second and advancing to third on a ground out before scoring on Ed Burnett’s base hit, giving DeRidder the lead.
Eunice tied the score in the top of the sixth; Mitchell Fuselier was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, and advanced to third on a two-base error by the Dragon’s catcher before scoring on a single by Stuart Turner.
Going into the bottom of the seventh with a 1-1 score, it looked like the game would go into extra innings when Daniel Morrison was hit by a pitch, advanced to second when Jarek Spears drew a walk, stole third and then scored on Michael O’Neill’s sacrifice fly to end the game.
Peterson pitched the win, giving up one unearned run off of three hits and a walk, while striking out six batters in seven innings.
Austin Young (7-3) took the loss for Eunice, giving up two earned runs off of three hits and four walks. Young struck out two batters in six-and-one-third innings of play.
The Bobcats will wrap up their regular season with a make-up game at Rayne Tuesday at 5 p.m.
The Class 4A state playoff seeding meeting will be held Wednesday.
