EVFC Cajunettes hold Exhibit Day
The Cajunette chapter of the Evangeline Volunteers for Family and Community Education held its annual Exhibit Day Thursday, May 22, at the LSU Cooperative Extension Office. Sarah Webb served as hostess for the event.
A short meeting was conducted by President Lynn Landreneau. The Pledge of Allegiance was said in unison and Sarah Webb recited the Club Collect.
The club participated in several activities since the April meeting. Five members took a “fun day” trip to St. Francisville, where they toured three antebellum homes. Members enjoying the day were JoAnne Eastin, Gwen Wolff, Joyce Coreil, Mary Soileau and Lynn Landreneau.
The club served refreshments for the Pro-Life Baby Shower at Sacred Heart Elementary. Members assisting as hostesses for the 4-H Club’s 100th birthday celebration were Nelda Fontenot, Tina Guillory, Joyce Coreil, Mary Soileau and Lynn Landreneau.
At the Exhibit Day, members displayed and explained exhibits made of heritage items from their families. JoAnn Eastin explained the Orphan Train memorabilia, which illustrated the life of her husband’s mother, Helen Eastin. Other Cajunettes exhibiting items they sewed or heritage items were Judy Waters, Joyce Coreil, Nelda Fontenot, Sarah Webb, Mary Soileau, Jackie Miller and Lynn Landreneau. Theresa Reed sent a rosary she had made.
Sharon Fontenot was the first guest speaker. She explained her job as grants coordinator for the City of Ville Platte. She also works with the YOU program to improve the lives of Ville Platte youth. She has acquired grants for the murals on Main Street and a fire training house. She showed a film titled “A Vital Connection.” It took four months to complete and edit the film, which was first viewed by the club. The film illustrates the need for a four-lane highway between Ville Platte and Opelousas, which was summarized by the number of vehicles coming to Ville Platte for educational needs, health care, commerce and agricultural purposes.
The second speaker was Dr. Carlos Smith, a horticultural specialist with the LSU Extension Service. He showed a number of flowers and shrubs and explained the best way to cultivate and grow flowers. He always highlights his speech with a lot of humor.
The luncheon was cooked by Jesse Wayne Fontenot and Raymond Guillory. After lunch, the club members played bingo.
A special guest in attendance was Martha Miller. The raffle cake made by Geneva Reed was won by JoAnne Eastin.
