Gents, Pios cruise to Jr. American Legion victories

CROWLEY – Crowley High and Notre Dame rolled to impressive Junior American Legion victories Monday, each winning by the 10-run mercy rule.

The Gents cruised to a 10-0 five inning victory over Washington Marion’s Jiffy Lube at Miller Stadium while the Pios posted an 11-1 road victory over Jennings’ Jeff Davis Bank.

In Crowley, Tyler Dupuis picked up his first victory of the summer, giving up just two hits and one walk in four innings of work on the mound. He struck out six.

Taylor Bertrand closed out the game in the fifth. The southpaw struck out the first two batters of the frame before surrendering a single to the leadoff batter. From there, Bertrand got a ground out to second to end the game.

Dupuis also led Crowley at the plate, collecting two of the Gents’ three hits on the night.

Dupuis singled and drove in a run in the first inning after two Gents crossed the plate courtesy of passed balls.

Dupuis then added to the Gents’ lead in the second inning with a two-run single to center. Another Gent crossed the plate on a passed ball, giving the locals a 6-0 advantage.

Justin Desselle recorded the Gents only other hit in the third inning, a run scoring single to left. Crowley added two more runs on walks and errors to increase its cushion to 9-0.

Blake Thibodeaux capped the Gents’ scoring in the fourth when he reached third on an error in the outfield before being plated on yet another passed ball.

In all, Washington Marion walked a total of nine batters and committed three errors.

Crowley, on the other hand, walked just one and committed two errors.

The Gents will be in action again today when they travel to Moss Bluff for a 6:30 p.m. contest before playing host to Rayne on Monday.

Over in Jennings, the Pios used three pitchers in their five-inning victory.

Jerry Menard worked the first two innings to get the win before giving way to Austin Robichaux in the third. Robichaux worked two innings before Zack Abshire came in to close in the fifth.

Menard, Mitch Corzine, Luke Bourgeois, Zack Abshire, Paiton McBride and Pete Petitjean each hit safely in the contest.

The Pios will be in action again this evening when they host Eunice at 6:30 before traveling to Lake Charles to take on Washington Marion Monday.
